Corruption of Arcana Weekly Devlog 7


The day we have all be waiting for has finally arrived! The Demo version of our game is now available for everyone and anyone to participate in. We hope that everyone enjoys their time in their adventures across Arcana, we ask again if you come across any problems in our game please let us know via our discord server. We also ask that after playing users take the small amount of time to fill our our feedback surveys which will be posted on the games Itch page and on our discord server.  

New Rougelite Mechanics

There are new roguelite and progression mechanics in place. Players can earn cards as they defeat enemies and bosses, or collect it from treasure chests. Beware that these cards will be taken from you when you die, leaving you to build up your deck once more. However, to alleviate the sting of death, dying will cash in your cards for gold, which can be used to purchase persistent upgrades. One of the places the player can purchase these upgrades is at various taverns they can find in the open world.

  • The tavern has finally been added into the game, Players can spend gold here in 2 different ways
    • Spend gold to restore Taro's Health
    • Spend gold to increase Taro's Max Health


Community Challenges

A new playtest means new challenges for you to undertake, each set of challenges will be available for 3 weeks. This gives players enough time to play normally, plan their strategy and figure out the best way to take on the challenge.

Series 1 of our community challenges contains 3 challenges for players to undertake.

Challenge 1

Run Taro, RUN - Speedrun the main story in the current version of the game

  • Requires video evidence
  • Fastest time gets an NPC named after them in the game

Challenge 2

Finest Knight in the legion - Complete all quests available in the demo (not including the final trial quest) in a single run. 

  • Quests can be found by pressing 'J' whilst exploring the realm
  • Requires video evidence
  • The first person to complete this gets an Arcana Knight named after them in the game

Challenge 3

Kingmaker - Complete the final trial quest (Quest #05)

  • Quests can be found by pressing 'J' whilst exploring the realm
  • Requires video evidence
  • People who complete this get a secret hidden boss named after them in the game

Make sure to submit your completed challenges in our community discord server using the challenge submissions channel


New Features

Among the new update is a small amount of fixes and changes we have introduced based off of feedback from marking staff here at the university. These changes will continue to appear of the next few weeks, these changes may not even be noticeable unless you know where to look.

Thoth Changes 

  • All buildings now have colliders to prevent players from walking through them
  • A new skybox has been added to simulate a morning sky
  • A new particle system is in place to represent rain
  • 3 new types of houses have been added to the town


East Forest Clearing Changes

  • More details have been added around the knights camp
  • Enemies now respawn across the forest when players re-enter the area
  • More grass has been added to the whole forest
  • Blue and yellow flowers are now merged into the grass to add a more detailed look to the area


Eastern Cave Changes

  • The cave located in the forest has been renamed from 'Cave' to 'Eastern Cave'
  • Some small log bridges have been added to help players cross the water located in the cave
  • Blue flowers have been added to the cave to brighten up the environment


Combat Changes

  • Skeletons are now in the game
    • Skeletons are raised from the dead using corrupted Arcana and will fight alongside corrupted golems and similar bosses
  • Wisps now have their own sprite
  • Enemy stat balancing


World Changes

  • A new quest has been added
    • This quest can be collected from a knight in the East Forest Clearing


Known Issues

  • Skeleton combat sprites were not sliced correctly and have a visible part of another skeletons shield next to them
    • This issue will be resolved in a future update but it not currently high on our priority list
  • Players HP wont visually update on the exploration UI when a potion has been used outside of combat
    • This a issue setting the correct value to the HP bar and will be solved in a future update
    • The correct health will be shown when the player changes levels (i.e combat -> Thoth) 


Looking to the future

It's been another busy week for us with internal marking and getting ready for a big playtest. but we have decided to take a step back from the creation of Tiertarock and Dehsuret Lagros, so we can work on refining and perfecting the look, atmosphere and mechanics of the game as as whole. As well as Thoth, the East Forest Clearing and the Eastern Cave regions of Arcana that you are free to explore.

Tiertarock and Dehsuret Lagros may not be available to players when our course finishes this year, but do not fear, if we as a dev team decided to continue the development of Corruption of Arcana over the duration of our 3rd and final year, we will bring these areas with us and make them even better by adding new enemies, characters, secrets, looks and even mechanics. But you'll have to wait and see, in the mean time, enjoy the game we have spent our time creating.
