Corruption of Arcana Weekly Devlog 10


This week, we have been focusing on improving the player experience and making the game feel much nicer to play.

New Features

Major Combat Changes
  • 3 Card Spread System
  • Weapons
  • Discard cards
  • Can now earn gold from fights

We have been attempting to introduce more elements of strategy and tarot themes into the combat of the game, and so we have designed a basic spread system. When you use a Major Arcana card in combat, you will save a spread card to the deck, which will be drawn after 2 additional cards have been used. We are planning on enhancing this feature further by adding special modifiers to cards based on if they are the first, second or third card cast, but we think this spread system will help increase the strategy behind choosing which cards to play.

From defeating certain bosses, you can now obtain weapons, which alter your starting deck. This will be changed in the future to allow you to earn them from quests or purchase them from vendors. You can also discard cards from your hand, so you don't have to keep cards you are not planning on using and we have also added gold rewards to fights.

Also, we've done some more combat research, and we have added a secret technique, known by many, but mastered only by a few, called the Will Smith slap.

  • This will be removed in the coming hotfix, so get some good play time in ;)


Taro Animations
  • Taro now has movement animations for moving forwards and backwards, which provides a bit of a step up in terms of how it feels to move the character around
    • We are still working on the sideward animations, but they are getting there
Thoth Changes

  • Kitty Cats!
    • On your travels around Thoth you may notice a cat or two hidden in the grass or on the rooftops
  • Lt Héirophante's dog has been moved a little further away ready to be given all the pats a good boy needs
East Forest Clearing Changes
  • Sprites for some quests are now only visible when the quest is active
  • Made the cave entrance more visible
  • Removed the ability for trees to fly above the ground
Eastern Cave Changes
  • Crystals have been placed on the ceiling
Exploration Changes
  • Replaced the compass icons with new detailed sprites which match the rest of the UI
  • New Quest markers have also been added
  • The compass NESW overlay has been fixed
    • We are working on having the quest markers appear above other icons on the compass
  • Reduced the font size of card names in the card menu

In the coming weeks, we are probably going to be focusing on improving the new player experience with an improved tutorial. As JD always says, we are making constant progress and we are gonna keep "Twerking and Working" on the game.
